One Hundred Years Later

One Hundred Years Later
animation
2012

One Hundred Years Later is a 20-minute animation using altered ukiyo‑e prints as backdrops, made in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake in 2011. A series of vignettes depict scenes of public and private life being overtaken by animistic forces and creatures (yokai); these creatures allegorize human disaster and environmental collapse, and its aftermath. Flows of oil paint on water evoke new forms of becoming.
